When the elders depart,
The blessing grows less.
The light in the home dims,
And its strong pillar bends.
The elder of my home went to heaven—
My greatness, my purity,
My quiet, kind eternity.

We are born innocent and pure into this world, walking hand in hand with our destiny without knowing at which crossroads we will meet it and bid farewell to earthly life. Today is a day of farewell, mourning, sorrow, and prayer to God.

Ladies and gentlemen, great sorrow fills these walls today. We have gathered to remember and honor Sogomon Kozanyan, a remarkable man whose love and kindness illuminated every year of his life.

Sogomon's journey began on March 31, 1951, when he was born to Hakob and Piruz Kozanyan. His sister Lida was born after him, and their loving parents surrounded both children with warmth and affection. He spent his carefree early childhood in Leninakan. When he was six, the family moved to Yerevan, and it was there that his story began to unfold.

Sogomon was an excellent pupil at Secondary School No. 48 in Zeytun, laying the foundations for his future from the first days of his education. After graduating, he devoted a period of his life to military service and demonstrated his commitment to his country. On returning, he began his academic journey at the Polytechnic University.

Everything around him interested him, from ideas to practical work. From a young age Sogomon showed a strong interest in business, which would shape his future. With his sharp sense of humor, friendly nature, and hospitable heart, he quickly became beloved. His good name and the life he lived belonged not only to him, but also to his family, his community, and every friend who knew him. His interests included sports, music, crafts, and art, and he approached them all with skill. He loved playing the accordion and bringing joy to people. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman who found rest in the peace and beauty of nature.

In 1986 Sogomon's life took a new direction when he and his family moved to the United States in search of opportunity and a new beginning. He was among Glendale's first Armenian businessmen and founded the well-known Kozanian Super Meat & Liquor market, which continues to operate today.

Life brought Sogomon both rises and falls. His son Hakob was born from his first marriage in 1990 and was proudly named for Sogomon's beloved father. Within a short time, however, he faced the loss of both parents, a profound trial of his endurance and strength. In 2008 he found devoted love and companionship when he married Roza Mutafyan. Roza cared for her beloved husband with special tenderness until the final moment of his life, affectionately calling him “Janul.”

Sogomon gave his love and care to Roza's children from her previous marriage and accepted them as his own. His bond with Gayane grew especially strong, not only as father and daughter but also as business partners. He taught her and entrusted her with the full management of the business.

Every person and event that enters our lives can change our destiny and lead us to important new decisions. One of Sogomon's most important decisions came when, experiencing God's eternal love, he repented and entrusted his life to the Lord Jesus Christ, gaining new spiritual values. As members of the Armenian Christian Mission Church, he and Roza participated actively for many years, giving both their time and financial support. Filled with love for God and the church, they often welcomed believers into their home, shared joyful fellowship, praised God, and offered loving hospitality.

Sogomon's adventurous spirit led him and Roza on many journeys. Whether traveling by RV, touring by car, or sailing—he was a highly skilled helmsman—they explored the world together. His legacy reaches far beyond his diligent work and achievements. He was known for unwavering principles, a strong but fair nature, and, as those who knew him say, for never needing to repeat himself. Though strict, he inspired respect and admiration. His absence will leave an everlasting longing in everyone privileged to share life's road with him.

Sogomon fought a long illness with steadfast courage and determination. Sadly, on June 2, 2023, at one o'clock in the morning, he closed his eyes in eternal sleep and peacefully departed this world, leaving an emptiness in the hearts of those who loved him. As we gather to say farewell, let us remember the profound impact he had on our lives and the cherished memories he gave us.

As it is written in 1 John 5:11–12: “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” Dear Sogomon, we know that you have now joined your beloved Savior, Jesus Christ, whom you loved above all else, and nothing can separate you from Him. Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints. Sleep in peace.

Sogomon Kozanyan—Janul, Sogo—we love and miss you deeply. May your soul find eternal peace, and may our cherished memories guide us on life's journey without you. Your legacy will forever inspire us to embrace every opportunity, love unconditionally, and leave a lasting mark on the world around us.
